A warehouse racking inspection checklist should make damage easy to identify, locate and escalate. The useful output is a clear action for a specific bay or component. A general tick against racking looks good tells the person arranging repairs very little and may hide a damaged upright behind stored stock.
Before using the template
Identify the rack layout and the person responsible for racking safety. Use the supplier information and the established inspection regime. SEMA guidance encourages staff to report damage immediately and describes competent inspection arrangements. A routine walk-round supports that system; it is not a structural assessment or permission to straighten a damaged component.
Copy and adapt: Add the actual task, asset or location, relevant instructions and the person responsible for each decision. This original template supports the site process.
Practical review checklist
| Review item | What to confirm or record |
|---|---|
| Location | Record aisle, rack run, bay and level so another person can find the observation. |
| Uprights and frames | Observe visible impact damage, distortion or other concerns from a safe position. |
| Beams and connections | Check visible beam seating, locking components and unusual deflection using the established inspection method. |
| Base and protection | Observe accessible baseplates, fixings and protective barriers without disturbing loaded racking. |
| Loads and pallets | Check visible load stability, pallet condition and placement against the assessed storage arrangements. |
| Load information | Confirm the correct readable load notice applies to the installed configuration. |
| Alterations | Identify changed beam levels, removed parts or additions needing supplier or competent review. |
| Damage action | Record immediate restrictions, person informed and the competent assessment or repair reference. |
A worked planning example
Illustrative example: an upright has fresh impact marks and a visible bend. The inspector records the exact bay, reports it immediately and follows the site arrangements to control access and use pending competent assessment. Measuring it casually against a guessed damage limit would not establish the rack is safe.
Follow-up and records
Use a damage log with location, component, description, photograph reference where permitted, report time, restriction, owner and closure evidence. Keep any unloading or isolation controlled by competent people because damaged loaded racking may create further risk. Verify authorised repairs and configuration changes before returning the affected area to normal use.
Keep the date, finding, action owner, due or hold point and closure evidence traceable. Record a reason for not applicable items. Escalate unresolved safety concerns before releasing the affected work.
Track outstanding actions in the daily safety officer report and review repeated issues through the safety committee action log.
Common questions
Can staff repair bent uprights themselves?
Do not improvise structural repairs. Use the supplier and competent repair process for the actual racking system.
Does a load notice cover any beam arrangement?
No. Check that the notice matches the installed configuration and seek review when the layout changes.
