A gas cylinder storage inspection checklist should start with identification. Cylinders can present very different hazards, so the storage arrangement must match the gases actually present. A cage can protect against unauthorised access while still having unsuitable segregation, poor ventilation or damaged restraints.
Before using the checklist
Use the supplier information, gas safety data sheets, site assessment and applicable local rules. BOC guidance addresses secure upright storage and segregation according to gas hazards. Do not select separation distances from an unrelated jurisdiction or assume that cylinder colour identifies the contents. Refer an unclear label or uncertain compatibility arrangement to the responsible competent person.
Copy and adapt: Use this original checklist within your controlled site process. Add the applicable references and retain evidence for each decision.
Gas Cylinder Storage Inspection Checklist
| Review item | What to confirm or record |
|---|---|
| Inventory and identity | Check readable gas identification and compare the cylinders present with the approved storage inventory. |
| Location and ventilation | Confirm the designated storage area and ventilation arrangements match the assessment. |
| Restraints | Check cylinders are in the required orientation and securely restrained against falling or movement. |
| Valve protection | Confirm required valve protection is present and there is no visible damage. |
| Segregation | Check the gas-specific storage separation and full/empty identification required by the site system. |
| Condition | Observe corrosion, impact damage or other concerns without attempting repairs or operating unfamiliar valves. |
| Surroundings | Check access, housekeeping, ignition-source controls and protection from vehicle impact where required. |
| Emergency readiness | Confirm signs, contacts, access restrictions and the procedure for a suspected leak or damaged cylinder. |
A worked example
Illustrative example: a delivery adds a gas type not listed in the storage assessment. The existing cage has spare space, but capacity alone does not establish compatibility. The receiving team holds placement and obtains the required review of segregation, ventilation and emergency arrangements. The inventory and storage plan are updated before the new arrangement is accepted.
Follow-up and records
Record defects by cylinder or storage location and assign an owner. A suspected leak needs the emergency procedure and supplier or emergency assistance as appropriate. Do not attempt to fix a valve, identify a leak using a flame or relocate a dangerous cylinder as a routine inspection task. Keep empty cylinders controlled because residual contents and pressure may remain.
Record the date, location or asset, findings, action owner, due or hold point and closure evidence. Use Yes / No / Not applicable only with a reason where needed. A blank or unexplained tick should not hide an unresolved concern.
Track outstanding actions in your daily safety officer report. Review recurring problems through your safety committee action log.
Common questions
Can cylinder colour alone identify the gas?
Do not rely on colour alone. Use the proper readable product identification and supplier information.
Do empty cylinders need storage controls?
Yes. Use the site and supplier arrangements for nominally empty cylinders and maintain clear identification.
