An extension lead inspection checklist should cover both the unplugged lead and the way it will be used. A sound cable can still create a hazard if it is overloaded, trapped in a doorway or routed through a vehicle path. Keep the equipment condition and the proposed route in the same review.
Before using the checklist
Disconnect safely before visual inspection. Do not open plugs, remove covers or carry out electrical tests unless competent and authorised. HSE guidance describes user checks, visual inspections and testing as parts of maintaining electrical equipment. A visual check does not replace testing where needed, and a past test label does not excuse visible damage.

Extension Lead Inspection Checklist for Workplaces
| Review item | What to confirm or record |
|---|---|
| Identification and rating | Check the lead can be identified and its rating and suitability for the intended conditions are known. |
| Cable jacket | Look along the accessible length for cuts, crushing, exposed conductors, burns or signs of deterioration. |
| Plug and socket housing | Check for cracking, missing parts, heat damage or insecure external components. |
| Cable entry | Look for visible damage or pulling at the plug, socket or reel entry points. |
| Reel instructions | Follow the manufacturer loading and unwinding instructions for the actual reel. |
| Environment | Confirm suitability for moisture, dust, outdoor exposure and other conditions of use. |
| Routing | Prevent trips, crushing and contact with damaging edges or moving equipment; keep escape routes clear. |
| Defect control | Remove damaged equipment from use and arrange competent assessment, repair or replacement. |
A worked example
Illustrative example: a lead has a current test label, but its outer jacket has been crushed by a trolley. The user isolates it from service and reports the damage. The label records an earlier check; it cannot establish the present condition. A temporary substitute is selected and routed safely while the damaged item enters the competent repair process.
Follow-up and records
Record the asset ID, observation, route, action and person informed. Avoid vague entries such as cable checked. Do not hide a damaged section with tape and continue using it. Where a temporary route remains necessary, assign responsibility for protection and review. A persistent need for extension leads may need a competent review of the power provision.
Record the date, location or asset, findings, action owner, due or hold point and closure evidence. Use Yes / No / Not applicable only with a reason where needed. A blank or unexplained tick should not hide an unresolved concern.
Track outstanding actions in your daily safety officer report. Review recurring problems through your safety committee action log.
Common questions
Does this inspection count as PAT?
No. It is a visual and use-arrangement checklist. Required electrical testing is a separate competent activity.
How often should we inspect?
Set checks and maintenance to suit equipment, use, environment, manufacturer instructions and applicable requirements; inspect before use for obvious damage.
