A welding machine inspection checklist should help the user identify an obvious equipment defect and refer technical issues to the right person. It is separate from a welding task assessment or hot work permit. A sound machine can still be used in an unsuitable location, while an approved work area does not make damaged equipment acceptable.
Before using the template
Identify the welding process and equipment model, then use the manufacturer instructions. Inspect only within your competence and with the equipment safely disconnected as required. OSHA 1926.351 sets US construction requirements for arc-welding equipment, holders, cables and related arrangements. Do not treat a visual walk-round as electrical testing or open a casing to complete this example checklist.
Copy and adapt: Add the actual task, asset or location, relevant instructions and the person responsible for each decision. This original template supports the site process.
Practical review checklist
| Review item | What to confirm or record |
|---|---|
| Identification | Record machine asset ID, model, process and the instructions used for the check. |
| Casing and controls | Look for visible damage, missing covers, insecure controls or obstructed ventilation. |
| Supply connection | Check accessible cable and plug condition without exposing live parts. |
| Welding leads | Inspect accessible insulation, connections and leads for visible damage or deterioration. |
| Holder and return connection | Check the components are suitable and their accessible condition matches the instructions. |
| Accessories | Check relevant torch, hoses and other process-specific items under the correct equipment procedure. |
| Maintenance evidence | Review required inspection, testing and repair records for the actual machine. |
| Defect management | Record concerns and arrange competent assessment before returning unsuitable equipment to service. |
A worked planning example
Illustrative example: the welder reports intermittent operation and a hot-smelling connection. The supervisor removes the machine from use through the site process and arranges competent investigation. Replacing a visible tag or reducing current without a diagnosis would not establish that the fault is resolved.
Follow-up and records
Keep equipment-condition findings distinct from fire precautions, fume control and operator competence. Address those through the task assessment and permit. Record the defect, isolation or removal action, person informed and return-to-service evidence. Do not make taped repairs, bypass protection or repeatedly reset a tripping machine as a substitute for competent assessment.
Keep the date, finding, action owner, due or hold point and closure evidence traceable. Record a reason for not applicable items. Escalate unresolved safety concerns before releasing the affected work.
Track outstanding actions in the daily safety officer report and review repeated issues through the safety committee action log.
Common questions
Does this checklist cover gas-welding equipment?
It focuses on a general arc-welding machine review. Use process- and manufacturer-specific checks for gas equipment and other systems.
Can a user carry out electrical repairs?
Only suitably competent and authorised people should perform the relevant repairs and testing.
